Sri Lanka

2020

Explore the rich culture, try unique food and be captivated by the colourful surroundings of Sri Lanka.

Many may think that Sri Lanka is a smaller version of India, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Sri Lanka is an all-encompassing destination in its own right. Packed into an island slightly smaller than Tasmania are sights, sounds, tastes and smells that you will find nowhere else.

It is populated with divergent people who display their own unique cultures and welcome visitors in to their very homes.  From the stunning beaches of the south to the cool climate of the central tea and spice growing regions, and on to the cultural diversity of the North, Sri Lanka holds excitement and fascination for all adventurous travellers.

Surf one of the yet to be discovered breaks, engross yourself in the history and culture of tea cultivation, hold your breath while searching for a sighting of the Sri Lankan Leopard or immerse yourself in the history of ancient Sri Lankan civilisations while climbing Lion Rock Fortress.  And wherever you go marvel at the variety and quality of a unique food culture that sings the praises of spices, vegetables and seafood.

Itinerary Summary

  • Negombo
Starting in the seaside town of Negombo just north of the international airport your Sri Lankan adventure will get underway with a microcosm of Sri Lankan life. Temples, canals and a stunning beach ease you into the journey, or for those who like to jump right in, a visit to the local fish market will get the senses stimulated.
  • Sigiriya
Leaving the coast, we head into the interior where we climb into a slightly cooler climate.  A highlight of the region is the opportunity to climb the ancient Lion Rock at Sigiriya and relive the history of the royal dynasties of Sri Lanka.
  • Dambulla
Heading into the interior we climb into a slightly cooler climate and arrive in Dambulla. Here we will visit the World Heritage listed Dambulla Cave Temple that has evidence of human occupation for 2,700 years.
  • Matale
Heading south through the hill country, we will stop in the Matale spice growing region to sample one or two of their finest dishes.  An explosion of taste not to be missed for all those who love a good curry.
  • Kandy
Our arrival in Kandy will put us at the heart of an ancient Sri Lankan civilisation quite distinct from the rest of the island and the cultural hub of the region.
  • Nuwara Elyia & Hill Country
Fancy a cup of tea? Well you have come to the right place as we head further south and climb into the hill country essential to the production of Sri Lanka’s most famous export.
  • National Parks
We will increase the pulse rate with a visit to one of the stunning National parks. This area is renowned for its leopards and nothing compares to the thrill of spotting this stunning big cat as the sun rises over the eastern horizon. There is a myriad of other wildlife and Yala in particular is famous for its bird life.
  • Galle
Back on the Indian Ocean we will follow the road around to Galle stopping at some of the stunning beaches on the South Coast.  In Galle you will have ample opportunity to explore one of the finest examples of an Asian fortress city, combining Portuguese, Dutch and native Sinhalese architecture.
  • Hikkaduwa
Relax for a few days beachside in Hikkaduwa and choose your own adventure, whether it be snorkelling, shopping or visiting the turtle nursery.
  • Columbo
Our Sri Lankan odyssey will finish back in Columbo.  A city where Buddhist temples and street markets rub shoulders with modern and colonial architecture.
