New Zealand Tour 1
Bottom of the South Island
Starting our trip in Christchurch, we will immerse ourselves in what has been described as the most English city outside of England. Learn about the emergence of a new inner city after the 2011 earthquake, see why Christchurch has earned the moniker “The Garden City” with a stroll through the world renowned botanical gardens, take a punt on the Avon river or stroll through the arts centre sampling local cuisine.
We head south from Christchurch stopping for a night in the McKenzie basin. We will visit the picturesque Church of the Good Shepard before wondering at the magical night sky in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, the largest of it type in the world.
After spending time at Aoraki / Mt Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain, and the place were Sir Edmund Hillary trained for his successful attempt on Everest, we continue into the deep south and the adrenaline capital of the world, Queenstown.
The thrills are only matched by the glorious natural beauty of this tourist mecca. Experience the Hamilton turn while bouncing down the Shotover river in a jetboat, challenge a category 4 rapid in nothing but a bit of inflated rubber, or if the mood takes you, jump of an 80 metre tall bridge. Whatever your level of comfort when thrill seeking, you will find it here.
The full glory of nature will be waiting at our next destination of Te Anau, the overnight stop for our visit to Milford Sound. Nestled deep in the world heritage listed Fiordland National park, you may never feel as remote again, or as inspired. Your cruise on the sound will definitely be a highlight of your trip and one you will remember for a life time. A trip across lake Te Anau to the glow worm caves will put the icing on the cake for this leg of our tour.
Heading North again to Queenstown’s smaller but equally impressive neighbour, Wanaka we take a day to breath in the pure mountain air and marvel at natures handiwork. If you want to slow the pace down then enjoy the beautiful town centre, negotiate the maze and puzzle centre or search for the tree in the lake. For the energetic perhaps a walk up Roy’s Peak for unrivalled views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains.
The first of two drives that can only be described as magical takes us from Wanaka across the main divide to the West Coast. Travelling along the shores of lake Hawera and Lake Wanaka we will drive into the heart of an ancient rain forest that is truly Jurassic in nature. Passing across to the West Coast will bring us to the Town of Franz Josef and its famous glacier. Walk to the terminus or treat yourself to a scenic flight and guided walk on the ice itself.
Heading further north to Hokitika and Greymouth we will learn more about the greenstone industry that is so connected to the South Island Maori people. A small pendant made from this local jade makes a perfect souvenir or gift and will last as a lifetime reminder of your trip to New Zealand.
The last leg of our journey will see us take in one of he worlds truly spectacular rail journeys. The TanzAlpine will take us through the heart of the South Island high country, over viaducts that will take your breath away and along valleys dwarfed by the scale of the mountains that surround them. Our arrival back in Christchurch will bring an end to our tour around one of the most inspiring islands you will ever see.

New Zealand Tour 2
Top of the South Island
If you have already followed the tourist circuit through the south of New Zealand’s stunning South Island, you may think you have seen everything this big little island has to offer. While you are in for a treat if you come on this tour, because the top of the South can be every bit as exciting.
Heading North from Christchurch, We roll past the vineyards of North Canterbury and on into Marlborough where the Southern Alps literally descend into the vast Pacific Ocean. In the Maori Language kai means food and koura, crayfish. This will give you a hint as to what the local specialty is when we arrive in Kaikoura.
The budding photographers among us may just get that iconic perfect tail shot of the legendary Sperm Whale, against the background of the imposing Southern Alps when on the world class whale watching trip this little seaside town is famous for.
Many of you will have sampled a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris, in fact they may well be your favourite white. Now you will be able to see where and how they are produced and learn a little more about one of the world’s great wine growing regions while touring some of the iconic cellar doors that surround Blenheim. This will be one day you will be glad you are not driving.
Going over the hill to Nelson will bring us to New Zealand’s sunshine capital and the centre of the Tasman region. Nelson is the gateway to The Abel Tasman National Park which we will enjoy by boat, kayak or on foot. It is New Zealand’s premier coastal walking track and will leave you desperate for more. Stopping in the tiny village of Takaka, where you will still find a small hippy vibe, we will get the chance to visit Pupu springs which despite its name, has the clearest spring water in the world.
Having reached the top of the island, we turn around and head south again. Winding down the Buller Gorge we overnight at Punakaiki and the ancient pancake rocks. If we are lucky the sea will be up and the blowholes will be sending spectacular spires of water high into the air. Some local bush walks will add to your understanding of the environment in this unique and unspoilt little peace of paradise as we head further south to the Grey River Valley.
Passing through historic gold and goal mining towns we climb back across the spine of the Southern Alps to the little village of Hanmer. Renowned for its Geothermal hot spring pools, you will find this idyllic hidden gem a perfect place to relax and reflect on your tour of the top of the south. Bushwalks, therapeutic waters, romantic mountain cafes, golf, bungee jumping, jetboating, its all here. Relax or pump adrenaline, it is up to you, but whatever you do, you will love this mountain treasure.
A short drive back to Christchurch will see our journey finish after breakfast the next day, but your memories will last a lifetime.
